What this is
DetectiveCheck takes one thing you already have, an email address, a phone number, a photo, a name or a password, and searches public records and open sources for whatever is connected to it. Then it writes the answer in plain language instead of handing you raw data.
Why we built it
The information was already public. What was missing was a way for an ordinary person to reach it without spending an evening in twenty browser tabs, and without paying an investigator four figures to do the same searching.
Professionals have had tools like this for years. The gap was never access to data. It was the interface and the price.
How we think about it
Every finding shows its source
A report that asks you to trust it is worth nothing. Each line links back to the record it came from so you can check it yourself, and so you can tell the difference between a confirmed match and a maybe.
An empty answer is an answer
When someone leaves almost no public trace, the report says so and lists what was checked. Padding a thin result with speculation would make the product feel better and be worse.
The person searched is not our customer, and still matters
Anyone can have themselves suppressed from our results, free, without an account, wherever they live. We did not wait for a law to require it. See Your privacy choices.
There are uses we refuse
We are not a background check service. Reports may not be used for hiring, housing, credit or insurance, and accounts used for stalking or harassment are closed. That is written into the Terms and the Responsible Use Policy, and it is enforced.
What we are not
- Not a consumer reporting agency, and not a substitute for one
- Not a monitoring or surveillance product
- Not a data broker. We do not sell personal information.
- Not a source of legal advice. A report is a starting point, not a conclusion.
