Which finds more, an email address or a handle?
Neither, and the question is the wrong shape. An address reaches 71 sources here and a handle reaches 71 platforms, which is a tie by any honest reading.
What separates them is the kind of answer. Ask a service about an address and it answers yes, that is registered — a fact with no face on it. Ask a platform about a handle and it usually hands over the profile: a display name, an avatar, sometimes a join date and a bio.
So an address is better at proving somebody exists and worse at showing you who they are. A handle is the reverse. Choosing between them is choosing which of those two questions you actually have.

What does an email address find that a handle cannot?
Three things, and the first is the reason addresses stay worth checking even when you already have a handle.
Accounts on services with no public profile. Banking, retail, ticketing, delivery. None of these publish a page you could find with a handle, and all of them will confirm whether an address is registered because their sign-up forms have to.
A rough age. A breach from 2016 proves the address existed in 2016, and Have I Been Pwned dates every incident it holds, free. Nothing about a handle dates it unless the platform chose to publish a join date, and most do not.
The domain. Anything that is not a free provider carries its own registration records, and a work address hands you the employer before you have found a single profile.
What does a handle find that an email cannot?
The person, more or less, which is why it feels more productive even when it returns fewer results.
A profile page is public by design, so a handle check returns things an address never will: the display name somebody chose, the avatar they picked, the bio they wrote, and on many platforms the date they joined. Those are the details that let you decide whether two accounts belong to one person.
It also reaches places an address cannot, because plenty of platforms will show you a profile without ever confirming which address registered it. Forums, code hosts, creative and gaming sites all work this way, and they are exactly where a decade-old handle tends to still be sitting.
The catch is that a common word as a handle returns strangers, and plenty of them. That is a cost of the same property that makes handles valuable.

Two doors, and they do not open into the same room. An address and a handle are not two routes to one answer; they are two answers.
Why do the two disagree so often?
Because people manage them completely differently, and the disagreement is usually the most informative part of a report.
Most people hold several addresses — work, shopping, the one from school — and hand out a different one per context on purpose. Almost nobody holds several handles. The name chosen at fourteen tends to be the name still in use at thirty, across services that did not exist when it was picked.
So an address search finds the slice of somebody's life that used that address, and a handle search finds the whole arc and some of it belonging to strangers who picked the same word. Neither result is wrong. They are answers to different questions, and reading them as one list is how people reach confident, wrong conclusions.
Which should you use when you have both?
Both, in this order, because the order changes what the second one costs you.
- The handle first. It returns profiles you can look at, and looking at them is how you find out whether you have the right person at all before spending more effort.
- Then the address. Now you know who you are looking for, so the service list and the breach dates confirm or contradict rather than sitting there uninterpreted.
Running them the other way round works and wastes time. A list of forty services attached to an address means very little until you have a face and a name to hang it on, and the handle is what supplies those.
There is one exception worth knowing. If the address is at a company domain rather than a free provider, run it first: the domain identifies the employer immediately, and that is usually more orienting than any profile.
How do you turn one into the other?
This is the step almost everybody skips, and it returns more than either search does alone.
Handle to address. Some platforms publish a contact address on the profile, and code hosts are the classic case: every git commit records the address that authored it, which is why GitHub offers a no-reply address specifically to stop it. Where nothing is published, a handle plus a known domain is a guess you can test rather than a fact.
Address to handle. Easier, and mostly automatic. Services that confirm an address frequently expose a display name or the local part of a profile URL alongside it, and either of those is a handle to run.
Then run the new identifier. A second pass on something the first pass discovered routinely returns more than the thing you started with, because you have moved from the identifier somebody guards to one they never think about.
What if the one you have returns nothing?
Then read which kind of nothing it is, because the two look identical in a badly built report and mean opposite things.
Sources that answered and found nothing is a finding. For an address it usually means young, used only for mail, or never registered anywhere. For a handle it usually means recently invented, which matters a great deal if somebody has been talking to you under it for a fortnight.
Sources that failed to answer is not a finding at all. In a run measured in July 2026, 11 of 74 email sources errored and 4 were rate-limited — a fifth of the run. Any tool that shows you only the hits has hidden that distinction, and the distinction is the whole difference between a gap and an absence.
Which one is harder for somebody to change?
The handle, by a wide margin, and that is the quiet reason it outperforms its source count.
Changing an email address is an afternoon of admin that people do voluntarily when they change jobs or get tired of spam. Changing a handle means abandoning a decade of reputation, followers, commit history and search results that point at the old name. Most people never do it, and the ones who try leave the old handle sitting there.
That asymmetry compounds. An address search describes somebody's present; a handle search describes their history, and history is the thing that cannot be manufactured on demand.
It also explains why an old handle beats a current address when the two disagree. The address in use today was chosen deliberately and recently; the handle was chosen before anybody was being careful.
