What does a Telegram username actually give you?
A display name, a photo, a bio and a link that opens in any browser, with no Telegram account of your own.
Telegram's privacy policy states that a profile name, profile photos and username "will always be public", and the FAQ offers t.me/username as the way people reach you without knowing your number.
Measured on 2 August 2026: t.me/durov came back titled "Pavel Durov", while t.me/nonexistenthandle999zz came back as a generic shell titled "Telegram: Contact @nonexistenthandle999zz" with a download prompt and nothing else. That contrast is how Telegram is read as one of the 71 platforms in our username lookup.

Can you find a Telegram account from a phone number?
Only when the account holder allows it, and Telegram says so in its own words.
Registration is by mobile number and the FAQ is flat about it: "Each phone number is a separate account on Telegram." The number is the identity underneath the handle. The reverse direction is a permission rather than a fact.
Telegram's description of phone links says a t.me/+number link "will only work if your privacy settings let others find you by your phone number". The route people use in practice is the contact sync Telegram built for exactly this: save a number in your address book, open the app, and it shows you whether an account answers to it.
Our own phone lookup does not do that. Eight sources run against a number here — the line itself, PayPal, Binance, Facebook and a public-mentions sweep, plus Brazilian registries where they apply — and Telegram is not one of them.
Which setting decides whether your number finds you?
Two settings, not one, and they do different jobs.
Telegram's API documentation lists them as separate privacy keys. privacyKeyPhoneNumber is "whether the user allows us to see his phone number". privacyKeyAddedByPhone is "whether this user can be added to our contact list by their phone number". The first hides the number on a profile you can already see; the second governs the search that starts from a number you already hold.
Both default towards contacts. The FAQ says a number is "only visible to people who you've added to your address book as contacts", and adds the caveat that matters: people will always see your number if they knew it already and saved it.
A username does not leak the number. Telegram states that if somebody finds you by username, messages you and you reply, neither party sees the other's phone number unless a privacy setting permits it.
The handle is rented, not owned. On Telegram it can be sold, reassigned or emptied in one screen.
Can you tell how old a Telegram account is?
Not reliably, and the method everybody quotes is not Telegram's.
Discord makes this easy because its IDs are snowflakes with a timestamp inside them, so the creation date is arithmetic on a number somebody handed you. Telegram publishes no equivalent: no epoch, no bit layout, no creation field on the user object.
The folklore holds that Telegram user IDs are issued in ascending order, so a smaller number means an older account. That is an observation about other people's data rather than a documented rule, and even taken at face value an ordering is not a date.
What circulates instead are bots that print a registration date from an ID. On Telegram's own bug tracker, a user reported one showing February 2025 for an account made years earlier; the answer was that it "is not related with telegram this is only a bot developed by someone else".
A Telegram handle is property, not an identity
It can be bought, sold and reassigned, which is unusual enough to change how you read one.
Telegram runs collectible usernames through Fragment, with ownership recorded on the TON blockchain, and says holders can "freely assign them to chats, sell them to others, or keep them for later use". One user, group or channel can hold several at once, each with its own t.me link.
Two consequences for anybody checking one. A handle you saw last year may point at a different person now, and one person may answer at three addresses. Neither is evidence of deception on its own.
Removing a username takes one screen: save an empty one and, in Telegram's words, people can no longer find you via search. Existing conversations are untouched, so an account can disappear from search and still be live.
What do public channels and groups reveal?
Usually more than the profile does, and they are readable without an account.
A public group carries a short link, and Telegram's FAQ says anybody can view its entire chat history and join to post. Channels broadcast to an unlimited subscriber list. Both appear in Telegram's global search and both open at a t.me address in a browser.
The two pages fetched for this article on 2 August 2026 carried their subscriber totals in the HTML itself, 11,391,149 and 9,925,649, with no API involved. What somebody posts in public is therefore checkable in a way that what they claim in a bio is not.
The limit is on the other side of the membership question. Which channels an account subscribes to is not public; what it wrote inside a public group is.
How Telegram turns up in the second stage of a scam
The sequence is consistent: meet on a public platform, move the conversation to Telegram, invest inside a group.
It is the shape described in our pig butchering guide, and Telegram supplies both halves of it — a channel the first platform cannot see, and a room of people apparently making money. The room is often real. The members posting profits are frequently accounts that joined the same week.
Forwarded messages deserve particular care. Telegram lets a user switch off the link back to their profile, so a forward shows "your display name in plain unlinked text" and cannot be traced to an account. The setting exists for good reasons and it also makes a fabricated screenshot unfalsifiable.
Check the handle elsewhere before the group. A trading channel with thousands of members proves the channel is popular, not that it is honest. The handle checked against other platforms, and the profile photo through a reverse image search, are worth more.
Is it legal to look up a Telegram account?
Reading a public profile or a public channel is lawful. The restrictions sit on what you do with it afterwards.
In the United States, using a lookup to decide employment, housing, credit, insurance or tenancy puts you under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and we are not a consumer reporting agency. In the EU and the UK, a public profile is still personal data and processing it needs a lawful basis under the GDPR.
Two things are out everywhere. Anything requiring somebody's credentials or a borrowed session, and using a result to contact, follow or pressure a person who has not asked to hear from you.
Telegram's own rules are a separate track from the law. Automated collection against the platform breaches its terms whether or not it breaches a statute, and the penalty there is losing the account rather than going to court.
Where to start when all you have is a handle
Run the handle everywhere else before you spend time on Telegram itself.
A Telegram profile is thin by design — a name, a photo, a line of bio — so the value is in whether the same handle has been sitting on a code host or a forum since 2013. Paste it into the box on this page and it goes to the username lookup, where 71 platforms are checked at once and Telegram is one row of the result rather than the whole of it.
Read the sources panel and not only the hits. A platform that answered and found nothing is evidence about the person; a platform that timed out is evidence about the internet, and the sample report shows that difference on the page.

Common questions
How do I find someone's Telegram account?
By their public username, which resolves at t.me/handle and returns the display name, profile photo and bio to anybody with a browser. A phone number only reaches the account if the owner's privacy settings allow it. There is no public directory of Telegram accounts beyond the global search inside the app itself.
Can you find a Telegram account by phone number?
Sometimes. Telegram is registered by mobile number, but finding an account from one is governed by a privacy setting. Telegram's FAQ says a t.me link built from a phone number only works if your settings let others find you that way. The usual route is saving the number as a contact and letting the app match it.
Does Telegram show someone's phone number?
By default, only to people who have already saved you as a contact. Telegram states that a number is visible to your address book contacts and can be narrowed further in Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number. It also warns that anybody who knew your number beforehand and saved it will keep seeing it regardless.
Can you tell when a Telegram account was created?
Not from anything Telegram publishes. There is no creation date on the profile and no documented timestamp inside the user ID. Bots that print a registration date are third-party estimates: Telegram's own bug tracker answered one such complaint by saying the bot was not related to Telegram and was developed by somebody else.
Is a Telegram user ID like a Discord snowflake?

Can a Telegram username change hands?
Yes, which is unusual among messaging platforms. Can I see which channels somebody follows?
No. Subscriptions are not public, so channel membership cannot be enumerated from outside. What is public is authorship inside a public group, where Telegram says anybody can view the entire chat history, and anything an account posted to a public channel it runs. Read those rather than guessing at memberships.
Will the person know I looked them up?
Not from opening their t.me page or reading a public channel, because neither sends a notification and neither touches the account. Saving their number as a contact inside your own Telegram app is different: it can make you visible to them as a mutual contact, depending on both accounts' privacy settings.
