What does a TikTok profile show a logged-out visitor?
A whole page, and it publishes more numbers than Instagram's equivalent does.
TikTok is explicit about the floor. Its help centre states that your name, username and profile photo will always be visible to anyone on or off TikTok, private account or public. On a public account the same page adds the biography, the posts, the follower and following lists and the likes.
The field list is not guesswork either. TikTok's own research documentation defines a public user as display name, bio description, avatar URL, verified status, following count, follower count, video count, likes count and bio URL.
Two of those have no Instagram counterpart. The following count and the running total of likes across every post are on the page by default, and together they size an account before you have watched a second of it.
Username or nickname: which one identifies the account?
The username, because it is also the address. TikTok documents the nickname as something else entirely.
The username carries the @ tag and makes up the profile link, so changing it changes the URL. The nickname is the name shown in the feed, in comments and in messages, and nothing makes it unique.

The cooldown is the useful half of that table. A handle written down last week cannot have moved more than once since, and TikTok adds that a surrendered username stays unavailable for a short period afterwards.
What does a single TikTok post give away?
Rather more than the video, and one endpoint hands part of it over with no login at all.
TikTok's oEmbed endpoint takes a post URL and needs no key. Queried on 3 August 2026 it returned the caption, the handle, the nickname, a thumbnail, the hashtags, and the sound with a link to the sound's own page.
The documented field set behind a post goes further: the creation time as a UTC epoch, a country code for where the creator registered, the sound id, the hashtags, the view, like, comment and share counts, and the subtitles where voice-to-text was on.
A location is the poster's own doing. TikTok's location page says a tag is chosen on the posting screen and then displayed in your post.
The account is the performance. Almost everything that can be read off it was put there deliberately, by the person being read.
Which settings close each of those fields?
Almost all of them, one field at a time, and none of the three at the top of the page.
A private account limits following, posts, LIVE, the bio, the likes and both the follower and following lists to people the owner approves. Post privacy is a separate control that works on public accounts too: each post can be set to Everyone, Friends or Only you.
Liked posts are the one people get backwards. TikTok says they are hidden from your profile by default, so a visible liked tab is a switch somebody turned on.
Three fields have no switch. TikTok states that the name, username and profile photo stay visible to anyone on or off the platform. A private account gates the posts and the lists, not the identity card at the top of the page.
What does TikTok tell an account owner about a visitor?
TikTok is unusual here: it actually built the feature, and it is off until both people switch it on.
Profile view history is opt-in and reciprocal, covers visits from the past 30 days, and is limited to accounts aged 16 or over with fewer than 5,000 followers. The version of that question that covers every other platform is answered separately, and this page will not re-argue it.
Activity Status is the other switch worth knowing about. It shows mutual followers when you were last active, needs both sides to have it on, is off by default, and stops reporting after two days.
Neither fires for somebody reading a public page while logged out. Following, messaging and commenting are the actions that put your name in front of the account owner.
Why can't you find a TikTok account from an email address?
Because TikTok publishes no route from an address to an account, and states that the address is not on the profile.
Its help centre puts it plainly: your email and mobile phone number aren't visible on your TikTok profile. No public directory is keyed to an address, and none of the 71 sources this site runs against an email address returns a TikTok account.
What an address does buy is a suggestion, inside the app. TikTok will suggest an account to somebody who holds that address in their contacts, but only where both sides enabled it.
One thing is worth not asserting. TikTok's recovery screen looks up login methods from an address, and the company documents nothing about what it answers for an address that was never registered.
What to do with a TikTok handle you already have
Read the profile, then stop treating the handle as a TikTok fact and start treating it as a string.
People reuse handles for years without thinking about it. The username lookup checks 71 platforms for the same one at once, and the valuable hits are the old ones: a code host from 2013 dates an identity in a way a follower count never will.
TikTok itself is not among those platforms, and the reason why is set out in full elsewhere. Anything advertising a TikTok handle check is worth testing with a handle you invented yourself.
The profile link is worth the click where there is one. TikTok requires at least 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account before an account can add a link, so the link is also evidence about the size of the account.
What a TikTok account cannot tell you
Where the person is, what they are actually called, and whether the account in front of you is theirs at all.
The country code attached to a post is where the creator registered the account, in TikTok's own wording. It is not where the video was shot and not where the person lives now, and reading it as a current location is the commonest mistake made with it.
A location tag is a claim the poster chose. TikTok invites people to suggest edits to tagged places, which is an admission that tags go wrong often enough to need a correction route, and it withholds some locations from tagging for safety.
The nickname is free text on a platform that checks nothing about it. A matching name, a matching photograph and a matching handle are three weak signals, and the honest way to use them is together rather than one at a time.
Is it legal to look up a TikTok account?
Reading a public profile is lawful. The restrictions sit on what you do with it afterwards, and they bite harder than the ones on looking.
In the United States, using what you find to decide employment, housing, credit, insurance or tenancy puts you under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and a consumer lookup service is not a consumer reporting agency.
In the EU and the UK, a public TikTok profile is still personal data, and processing it needs a lawful basis under the GDPR. The general shape of that is set out in our piece on looking somebody up legally.
TikTok's own terms run on a separate track from the law. Automated collection breaches them whether or not it breaches a statute, and the penalty there is losing an account rather than going to court.

Can you find someone's TikTok account from their email address?
No. TikTok's help centre states that the email and phone number on an account aren't visible on the profile, and the platform publishes no directory keyed to an address. The only thing an address does is let TikTok suggest the account to somebody who already holds it in their phone contacts, and only where both people enabled contact syncing.

Can you see somebody's liked videos on TikTok?

A visible liked tab is therefore a deliberate setting, and an empty one tells you nothing about what the person has liked.
Can a username search find a TikTok account?
